Emiliano Andrade Dies in ICE Custody Despite Green Card
He had a green card. He had lived in America for decades. He had three American-born children. And after nearly four months in ICE detention, Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias was dead.
On October 17, 2026, 56-year-old Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias was found unresponsive at the Rio Grande Processing Center in Laredo, Texas. Staff attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead.
And here comes the detail that makes this tragedy particularly disturbing: ICE itself confirmed that Andrade-Covarrubias was a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
A Green Card Apparently Wasn’t Enough
Andrade-Covarrubias had spent decades living and working in Dallas, raising three children and building a life in America.
On June 26, he was detained while returning from Mexico.
ICE alleges he obtained his permanent residency fraudulently by failing to disclose a 2004 theft arrest. His daughter, Estefani Andrade, disputes that allegation, explaining that he disclosed his criminal history and immigration authorities approved his application anyway.
His immigration case was still pending, with a hearing scheduled for November 2.
He never made it there.
Apparently, under Trump’s immigration crackdown, even having legal residency doesn’t necessarily protect you from months of detention. This is Trump’s American Dream, if you have the right skin color.
He Needed Medical Care. His Family Says ICE Ignored Him.
According to his daughter, Andrade-Covarrubias suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition.
He reportedly had medication with him when he was detained, but his daughter alleges detention staff refused to provide it.
She also says he complained of breathing difficulties and chest tightness, only to have his concerns dismissed.
ICE insists he received appropriate medical treatment. His cause of death remains undetermined pending an autopsy.
Someone is going to have to explain the difference between ICE’s assurances of proper medical care and this family’s account of repeated requests for help.
A Family Deserved Better Than This
Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking details is how the family reportedly learned of his death.
Not through a compassionate telephone call from ICE.
Not through an official explaining what happened.
According to his daughter, they learned the devastating news from the county medical examiner.
Meanwhile, the Mexican government has announced plans to pursue a criminal complaint, and Congressman Henry Cuellar has demanded answers about the facility’s procedures and Andrade-Covarrubias’ treatment.
Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Has a Human Cost
Donald Trump has repeatedly portrayed his immigration enforcement agenda as a mission to protect Americans from dangerous criminals.
But what exactly was the public being protected from here?
A 56-year-old painting contractor? A father of three? A man with a green card whose immigration case hadn’t even been resolved?
Trump’s political messaging packages immigration enforcement as a tidy contest between law-abiding Americans and dangerous outsiders. Andrade-Covarrubias’ death exposes how misleading that simplistic narrative can be.
This was not a man whose removal proceedings had concluded. This was a legal resident awaiting his day before an immigration judge.
And instead of receiving that hearing, he died in federal custody.
The government had a duty to keep him safe while it detained him. Whether it fulfilled that duty deserves independent scrutiny.
Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias deserved medical care, dignity and due process.
His family now deserves something the Trump administration should be capable of providing without another publicity campaign:
Answers. Accountability. And the truth.
