Trump Family Made $2.3 Billion in Crypto as Investors Lost Billions

Imagine investing your hard-earned savings in a cryptocurrency promoted by the President of the United States, only to watch your money evaporate while the president and his family walk away billions richer.

Welcome to the Trump family’s crypto empire, where the American Dream apparently means making sure the Trumps get rich, regardless of what happens to everyone else.

And this isn’t merely political criticism. A June 2026 Reuters investigation revealed financial figures so extraordinary that they raise a rather uncomfortable question: Is this legitimate entrepreneurship, or a spectacularly profitable scheme built around political influence?

$2.3 Billion for the Trumps. $2.3 Billion in Investor Losses.

According to Reuters, Donald Trump and his family generated at least $2.3 billion in profits from four major cryptocurrency-related ventures, while outside investors suffered an estimated $2.3 billion in losses through April 2026.

Reuters estimates as of April 2026. Investor losses include unrealized losses, not solely money permanently lost through completed sales.

The ventures included World Liberty Financial, the $TRUMP meme coin, ALT5 Sigma (renamed AI Financial Corp.), and American Bitcoin.

Perhaps the most remarkable detail? Reuters found the family had put little or none of its own money at risk.

That’s an impressive business model: other people supply the money, other people shoulder the risk, and the family collects the rewards.

The Presidential Meme Coin That Became a Money Machine

Just three days before his January 2025 inauguration, Donald Trump promoted his $TRUMP cryptocurrency.

Supporters rushed in. Prices soared. And then reality arrived with a baseball bat.

According to Reuters, the token generated approximately $616 million for the Trump family, while buyers collectively lost more than $700 million.

One investor interviewed by Reuters had purchased $2,000 worth of $TRUMP tokens. By May 2026, her holding was worth less than $120.

That’s not exactly the financial revolution supporters were promised by the broader Trump crypto movement. Unless the revolution involves transferring wealth from ordinary investors to a billionaire’s family.

World Liberty Financial: Democracy for Sale, Profits for the Family

World Liberty Financial promised to democratize finance. Yet its arrangements entitled Trump-affiliated entities to 75% of specified token-sale revenue.

Reuters estimated that the venture generated more than $1.4 billion for the family from governance-token sales, while investors sustained approximately $674 million in losses.

World Liberty has maintained that its governance tokens are not investment products, and its marketing included disclaimers warning buyers not to expect profits.

A convenient distinction, perhaps, when politicians and their families collect enormous revenues from selling assets whose buyers subsequently lose substantial value.

The Ultimate Irony: Crypto for You, Stocks and Bonds for Trump

A July 2026 Reuters investigation found that, while Trump and his sons promoted cryptocurrency ventures, the president’s money managers were directing substantial proceeds into traditional stocks and bonds.

Apparently, cryptocurrency is the future of finance, but traditional investments are good enough when it’s your own fortune on the line.

Is This a Scam?

Calling these ventures criminal scams would require evidence of fraud, not merely enormous investor losses. No such legal conclusion is established by the reporting cited here.

But there are legitimate reasons for investors to feel exploited: political celebrity drove demand, insiders collected extraordinary revenues, and ordinary buyers carried considerable downside risk.

The situation is even more troubling because Trump’s administration oversees the industry from which his family profits. Ethics experts interviewed by Reuters described unprecedented conflicts of interest, while the White House denied that Trump or his family had engaged in conflicts.

And on October 21, Trump was publicly celebrating his administration’s crackdown on cryptocurrency scams overseas. Fighting crypto fraud is certainly admirable. Perhaps a closer examination of the family business would demonstrate the same enthusiasm for accountability at home.

The Bottom Line: America First, Trump Family Firster?

The Trump family’s crypto business has generated extraordinary wealth. For many buyers, the experience has been considerably less magical.

The question isn’t whether every cryptocurrency investor deserves guaranteed profits. They don’t.

It’s whether a sitting president should be allowed to promote an industry, influence its regulation, and financially benefit from companies selling risky products to the very public he’s supposed to serve.

When the family earns billions regardless of whether investors succeed, perhaps the real product isn’t cryptocurrency at all. Perhaps it’s the Trump name, packaged as financial opportunity.

And that may be the most expensive presidential autograph in American history.
