Should Pete Hegseth Fear a Democratic Midterm Victory in 2026?

A Democratic victory in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections could dramatically change the political environment for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The consequences could extend well beyond uncomfortable congressional hearings.

In fact, Democrats have already introduced articles of impeachment against him, and at least one Republican has joined the effort.

1. Impeachment Is Already on the Table

On April 15, 2026, Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari introduced six articles of impeachment against Hegseth.

The allegations include unauthorized military action against Iran, violations of the laws of armed conflict, mishandling sensitive information, obstructing congressional oversight and abusing official authority. These remain allegations, not established criminal findings.

More strikingly, Republican Representative Thomas Massie introduced his own impeachment resolution in September, challenging Hegseth’s conduct of the Iran conflict.

This is no longer exclusively a Democratic campaign against a Republican Cabinet secretary.

2. Signalgate Could Return to Haunt Him

Remember the Signal messaging scandal?

In 2025, Hegseth shared sensitive details about imminent military strikes against Yemen in a Signal chat that inadvertently included a journalist.

The Pentagon inspector general subsequently found that his actions created operational security risks, including potential danger to American pilots.

Hegseth characterized the findings as a total exoneration, but the inspector general’s conclusions did not support that description.

A Democratic House majority could reopen scrutiny through subpoenas, sworn testimony and access to additional records.

3. The Iran War Could Become a Congressional Battleground

Hegseth’s conduct during the Iran war is already central to impeachment efforts.

Lawmakers have raised questions about the legal authority for military operations, civilian casualties and potential violations of the War Powers Resolution.

Democratic lawmakers are also discussing investigations into military strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean.

These investigations would not automatically establish wrongdoing. They could, however, compel detailed public explanations of decisions that have faced limited congressional scrutiny.

4. Could Democrats Actually Remove Him?

There is an important constitutional distinction between impeachment and removal.

  • Democratic House majority: Could launch investigations, issue subpoenas and impeach Hegseth by a simple majority.
  • Democratic Senate majority: Could conduct more aggressive oversight, but removal following impeachment would still require a two-thirds Senate vote.
  • Both chambers controlled by Democrats: Would increase congressional investigative powers without guaranteeing Hegseth’s removal or any criminal prosecution.

5. What About Trump’s Protection?

President Donald Trump has supported Hegseth, while the Pentagon has defended his leadership.

Political loyalty, however, does not prevent congressional investigations.

Trump’s backing could help Hegseth remain in office even amid damaging hearings, but it would not eliminate Congress’s constitutional oversight authority.

According to reporting published in October, prominent Democrats are already discussing Hegseth as a potential impeachment target if they gain the House.

The Bottom Line

The immediate consequence of a Democratic congressional victory would be greater scrutiny rather than automatic removal.

Hegseth could face subpoenas, public hearings, impeachment proceedings and closer examination of military decisions made under his leadership.

Whether those proceedings would establish misconduct, produce bipartisan support for removal or lead to any other legal consequences remains uncertain.

One thing is already clear: Congressional efforts to investigate and impeach Hegseth are not merely hypothetical. They began before the midterms.
